My Thoughts
This book is really impressive in its stories, scope, and premise.  Jayden is a very well written heroine who is down to earth and doesn't let all the pomp and circumstance of her new found status as a royal effect her.  She goes through so many trials and tribulations throughout the course of this tale, that the emotional rollercoaster ride alone is well worth the time spent reading this book.
When you add to that the host of characters, the building of worlds, and the intermingling of parallel story lines, you have quite the story.
Ryder and I had a love hate relationship for the majority of this book.  While he is delicious physically; he seemed a bit obsessed  at times with Jaden.  Admittedly I was sad to see them have to part.
Though there are some action scenes, this read is mostly about the world and relationship building.
Also it is good to note when reading this book that there is a second part to this series.  It is my feeling that a great many unanswered questions will be addressed in later installments.
This is a wonderful book that transports the reader from his or her world to those within its pages with ease.  I recommend this book to fans of high fantasy and time travel.

My Thoughts
Miss Fortune Cookie presents readers with a story of three charming  young women transitioning from high school students, unquestioningly obedient daughters, and best friends; to free thinking young adults, ready to challenge expectations and follow their own diverging paths.

The thing that makes this story stand out is the fact that the narrator Erin, presents her world to readers from the point of view of an outsider looking in.  She is Caucasian, and though she was born in China and now lives in San Francisco's Chinatown with her mother, she never quite feels as though she belongs.
Add to this, the fact that her two best friends are Chinese and as such are subject to the demands for success and traditional beliefs and attitudes of there families, coupled with the fact that all three girls are students at a very competitive school and all vying for places at prestigious colleges and this story screams "great read".

The further that you go into this book, the more that it becomes apparent that there is some serious role reversal going on.  While Erin tries her best to embrace the Asian culture, her friends who are indeed Asian, do their best to go against the grain.

The bright and unpretentious writing style and effervescent humor found within these pages is very relateable for both younger and older audiences.  Watching these characters deal with issues such as personal desires vs. family expectation, friendship, love, choices and their consequences is bound to strike a chord in the hearts and minds of all readers.

Biography

I grew up on a sailboat, sharing the tiny forecastle with my sister and the sail bags. Against all odds, we are still friends. We started sailing in California and ended in Argentina. My favorite stops along the way were Costa Rica, Panama, Isla Providencia, Key West, the Azores, the Canary Islands, and Brazil.

During our voyages, my sister drew beautiful paper dolls for the both of us. We sewed amazing wardrobes for our stuffed animals. We became excellent swimmers and beach combers. We made up new lyrics for old songs. Canned food dominated our meals on crossings, so we really appreciated fresh fruit when we came into port. I dreamed of ice cream on the open ocean.

We kept up with school through a program called Calvert out of Maryland.

My dad read to us at night by the light of a kerosene lamp. Since then, I've always loved stories and wanted to write my own.

I live in Taos, New Mexico with my husband, and two sons. We often see coyotes outside our window.
